Wagon Master's Quarters

The Wagon Master’s journey to Boon’s Lick, Saint Charles, Missouri.

“…immense numbers of wagons, carriages, carts, etc. with families, have for some time past been daily arriving.  During the month of October it is stated that no less than 271 wagons, four-wheeled carriages and 55 two-wheeled carriages and carts passed near St. Charles, bound principally for Boon’s Lick.”~ Franklin Missouri Intelligencer, November 19, 1819

“Boon’s Lick was the common centre of hopes, and the common point of union for the people. Ask one of them whither he was moving, and the answer was, ‘To Boon’s Lick, to be sure.‘”  ~ Timothy Flint, 1826

The Wagon Master was one of the integral components in the expedition West or Great Migration. A wagon master had two jobs. He had to keep the wagons moving toward their destination day after day despite all obstacles. He also had to maintain harmony and a spirit of teamwork among the members of his party and to resolve daily problems before they became divisive. A wagon master’s worth was measured by his ability to reach the destination safely and to keep spirits high along the way. He had to do both in order to do either.* (Harvard Business Review, J.S. Ninomiya)
